Lexus has announced they will be manufacturing a new luxury compact crossover SUV, likely dubbed the NX 200t. The vehicle will slot below the current 2013 Lexus RX and will also have a hybrid version called the NX 300h. In the United States, the compact crossover is becoming one of the most popular vehicle types, especially among luxury manufacturers, because they provide an SUV’s larger size, increased fuel economy, and many luxury amenities.
The NX Series
While the vehicle has been confirmed, the name hasn’t, but Lexus has trademarked both the NX 200t and NX 300h names, which leads us to believe they will be used for the new compact CUT series. Reportedly, the vehicle will use a modified form of the platform used for the Toyota RAV4. The regular NX 200t is expected to feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which will be a first for the Lexus brand.
The NX 300h Hybrid
It has been confirmed that the NX 200t will be paired with a hybrid model. Reports suggest the crossover hybrid will utilize a combination gas engine and electric motor similar to that of the 2013 Lexus ES hybrid. As seen in that model, the powertrain would feature a 2.5L four-cylinder engine capable of producing 200 hp. The 2013 ES 300h receives 40 mpg city and 39 mpg highway thanks to its hybrid powertrain. Due to the NX’s small size, we can expect to see similar levels of efficiency.
Vehicle Release Date
Kazuo Ohara, the deputy chief officer of Lexus, has given his confirmation that the compact crossover will be making an appearance at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, which will be held this November. At the show, Lexus will display a concept version of the model. Provided there are no significant changes that need to be made, Lexus will then showcase a production model in early 2014. The target seems to be the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March. Then the vehicle could reach McGrath Lexus midway through the year or in early fall 2014 as part of the 2015 model year.
McGrath Lexus will post more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, you can contact the dealership to learn the latest.
